Nick Caputo spent 32 years in the fire service in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Before retiring in 2010, Nick was assistant fire chief in Henrico County (VA) and deputy fire chief in Spotsylvania County (VA).
Nick has extensive experience in the administration of capital and operational budgets, grant writing and administration, human resources functions including substance abuse testing, tuition reimbursement programs, career development and officer qualifications programs, screening employment and promotional applications, scheduling interviews and compiling interview panels, developing interview questions and rating sheets, and developing and implementing promotional assessment centers.
Nick has presented at the Virginia Fire and Rescue Conference, Virginia Fire Officer’s Academy and the IAFC Conference. Topics included Trends in the Fire Service, Current Events, Strategic Planning, CFAI/CPSE Chief Fire Officer Designation; Fire Service Accreditation process, Leadership, Organization Change Management, Ethics, Recruitment and Retention, Assessment Center 101, and the Virginia Volunteer Workforce Solutions program. In addition, he has extensive experience leading focus groups and providing facilitator services, most recently for the IAFC Grant Development Criteria Project related to FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grants programs.
Nick served on the executive board of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association (VFCA) and served as the chair of the VFCA’s professional development committee. He is active in the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) as an instructor and served for 10 years as the plans chief for the NFFF’s national memorial weekend. Nick served as the co-chairperson for the Commonwealth of Virginia Medal of Valor Review Board as appointed by Governors Warner and Kaine.
He received a Bachelor’s degree in safety and risk administration and a master’s degree in public administration, both from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s executive fire officer program and was a chief fire officer as designated by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
